The one here brings before us a contrast; the darkness surrounding the town of Bethlehem contrasted with the light shining from a bright star. Darkness and light are themes that are continually brought before us at Christmas. These are of course metaphors that are endeavouring to push our minds to something else, to a different type of darkness and light. The light is coming into a world shrouded in darkness or evil. That light will shine in the face of one that will be born in a stable, the Lord Jesus Christ.
