Israel has been defeated. The ark being captured seems to be the main cause of distress. As soon as Eli hears it he falls and dies. It's first in the list of things told to Phinehas' wife and is reflected in the name she gives her child. The glory has not departed  from Israel because the ark has been captured, but rather, the ark being captured is the visible sign of His glory departing. We see visible signs of God's glory having departed. Do we care that God is worshipped by so few? He may purposely withdraw from us to discipline us, but we can take comfort from His promise that He will never leave or forsake us.
