This battle will not come to an end until the return of Christ. As pilgrims in this world we will need to fight this enemy. He is a defeated enemy but not yet destroyed. A breastplate protects vital organs. It is the righteousness of Christ that saves us. It makes the devil's job easier when he sees us dressed in our own righteousness.
