He takes his marriage vows seriously and is faithful. He must also manage his children well. He must be above reproach in personal discipline: sober minded, self-controlled and respectable. If he cannot even govern himself, how can he maintain control in the church? The elder must not be one who flies off the handle. He doesn’t refrain from correction but does so gently and kindly with the heart of a shepherd. These things will always need to be developed throughout our Christian lives. Character matters above all else.
