John quotes from Zechariah, written approximately 500 years before the death of Christ. John's first readers would have been very familiar with the Old Testament and known exactly what John was referring to with Jesus fulfilling the prophecy of the Good Shepherd. Why do the pronouns change from Me to Him? Who are "they"? Why does it lead to mourning? And is it all fulfilled?
