Paul desired to know Christ more. When we become a Christian it is only the beginning. We become joined to Christ. His experience becomes ours. Having died and risen with Christ, we are no longer slaves of sin. but are free from its power. Paul also wants to share in Christ's sufferings, knowing He told His disciples they would suffer. Following Christ means we need to take our stand. We sorrow, but with hope of the future resurrection.
