The priority of Paul's prayer for the believers in Ephesus is that they would know God. This is the central aim of the Christian life and goes beyond mere theology or intellectual assent. It is about deep, personal communion with God. The possibility of this is only through the work of the Holy Spirit, who brings illumination. The Gospel is more than just an "insurance policy" against judgment. True religion is about having one's eyes opened by the Spirit to behold the glory of the Lord and know Him personally.
