Paul takes these words that might have been a common greeting in Ephesus and uses them in a Christian sense; grace and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace is the fountain or source of peace. We need the grace of Jesus Christ to be at peace. Peace comes from realising our created purpose, to know God. Our greatest problem is sin that makes us at war with God. God gives us everything when we deserve nothing: forgiveness and a right standing before Him.
